Wehen Wiesbaden Secures Victory Over Youthful Bayern Munich Squad

SV Wehen Wiesbaden claimed a 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich in a recent pre-season friendly. The match saw Bayern Munich field a team primarily composed of younger players, with an average age of 17.6 in their starting lineup, as many first-team members were absent due to World Cup commitments. Despite the loss, Bayern Munich midfielder Tom Bischof expressed that such a result is “normal” at this stage of pre-season preparations.

The game marked Bayern Munich’s first match since their DFB-Pokal success against Stuttgart on May 23. Vincent Kompany, the coach, opted for a youthful side, acknowledging the challenges it might present. Ibrahim Ati Allah opened the scoring for Wehen Wiesbaden in the 10th minute, with his shot finding its way past goalkeeper David Podar-Stiube. Kompany made three changes in the 25th minute to adjust the team’s dynamics.

Bischof’s Penalty and Late Decider

Bayern Munich managed to equalise just before the hour mark through Tom Bischof. He successfully converted a penalty after Tim Binder was fouled inside the area by Justin Janitzek. Bischof, a 21-year-old midfielder, was one of the more experienced players in the youthful Bayern squad. He noted his confidence in taking the penalty, stating he had practiced them frequently and was pleased with the outcome.

Despite Bayern’s efforts, Lukas Schleimer secured the win for Wehen Wiesbaden with a goal in the 83rd minute. This late goal sealed the 2-1 victory for the third-tier side. The match statistics indicated a close contest, with Daniel Scherning’s side slightly edging the expected goals (xG) battle, achieving 1.29 from eight shots compared to Bayern’s 1.22 from 11 attempts.

Bischof reflected on the game, mentioning that Bayern controlled the play for significant periods but perhaps lacked some movement, which he attributed to being only one week into training. He felt the team could have won the match and commended the overall performance of the younger players.

Looking Ahead for Bayern Munich

This friendly was only the second encounter between Bayern Munich and Wehen Wiesbaden. Their previous meeting in the 2025-26 DFB-Pokal first round also proved to be a challenging fixture for Bayern. In that match, Michael Olise and Harry Kane had given Bayern a comfortable lead, but Fatih Kaya scored two goals in six minutes in the second half to level the score. Kane ultimately secured a 3-2 victory for Bayern with a 94th-minute winner, preventing extra time.

Kompany highlighted the importance of these pre-season matches for the younger players, especially with many senior players still absent. He acknowledged that Wiesbaden had posed a tough challenge in their previous cup encounter, making this friendly a valuable test for the squad.

Bayern Munich has several upcoming friendly matches scheduled against teams such as FC Rottach-Egern, Jeju SK FC, Aston Villa, and RB Leipzig. They are also set to face RB Leipzig again in the Telekom Cup. Following these friendlies, Bayern will compete against Borussia Dortmund in the DFL-Supercup final on August 22, before commencing their Bundesliga season against Stuttgart six days later.
