Jadumani Singh secures quarter-final spot
Jadumani Singh Mandengbam of India secured his place in the men’s 55kg boxing quarter-finals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He achieved a dominant 5-0 unanimous decision victory over Sumama Rehman of Pakistan in their Round of 16 contest on Sunday. This win continues Jadumani’s strong performance at the Games, having previously defeated Aaron Cullen of Scotland in the Round of 32.
The match against Rehman saw both fighters exchange punches in the opening round, with Rehman utilizing his height and reach advantage, while Jadumani employed quick footwork and combinations. The Indian boxer gradually took control in the second round, scoring a knockdown on Rehman and shifting the momentum. All five judges awarded the contest to Jadumani after three rounds.
Jadumani, who earned a silver medal in the 50kg division at last year’s World Boxing Cup Finals in Noida before moving to the 55kg category, showcased his speed and composure. He is set to face Ellis Trowbridge of England in the quarter-finals on Tuesday. A victory in this bout would guarantee Jadumani a medal, as both losing semi-finalists receive bronze medals under Commonwealth Games boxing rules.
Preeti Panwar advances to quarter-finals
In the women’s 54kg category, Preeti Panwar also advanced to the quarter-finals with a commanding performance. The 22-year-old boxer from Bhiwani secured a win via Referee Stop Contest (RSC) decision in the second round against Deborah Mtenje of Malawi. Mtenje faced two standing counts during the bout, one in each round, leading to the referee stopping the contest with 47 seconds remaining in the second round.
Preeti, an Asian Games bronze medallist and a gold medallist at the New Delhi World Cup last year, received a unanimous nod from all five judges in the first round. This victory places Preeti just one win away from securing her first Commonwealth Games medal. She is scheduled to compete against Nicole Clyde of Northern Ireland in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.
The two boxers have a history, having trained together as sparring partners in Belfast prior to the Games. Clyde reached the quarter-finals by defeating Nancy Bamfo of Ghana in the pre-quarterfinals. Preeti commented that her first bout allowed her to assess the ring environment before becoming more aggressive in the second round.
Other Indian boxing developments
India’s boxing contingent has seen further success at the Glasgow Games. Lovlina Borgohain, an Olympic medallist competing in the women’s 75kg division, has already secured India’s first confirmed boxing medal. She received a direct bye into the semi-finals, which guarantees her at least a bronze medal. Lovlina is slated to face Tarona Khanum Badi Pasoni Taafaki of Tuvalu in the semi-finals on July 31.
Additionally, Sachin Siwach, a medal prospect in the men’s 60kg division, progressed from the Round of 32. He defeated Keoma Al-Ahmadieh of Canada with a 4-1 split decision. Siwach, from Bhiwani, Haryana, will next compete against William Hewitt of England on Monday for a spot in the quarter-finals.
With these advancements, India’s 14-member boxing team, comprising seven male and seven female boxers, continues to contend for medals across various weight categories in Glasgow.
