Harare: Shreyas Iyer celebrates first T20I series sweep as India captain

Shreyas Iyer has achieved his first T20I series victory as captain of India, leading the team to a 3-0 clean sweep against Zimbabwe. The final match of the three-game series saw India secure a 35-run win on Sunday, capping off a dominant performance throughout the tour. This marks a significant turnaround for Iyer, who took over the captaincy from Suryakumar Yadav earlier this year.

The series win comes after a challenging period under Iyer’s leadership, which included a 2-0 series defeat to Ireland and a 4-0 loss against England in a five-match T20I series. The initial victory in the opening match of the series in Harare, where India won by seven wickets, was Iyer’s first as T20I captain.

Captain’s message and team performance

Following the clean sweep, Iyer delivered a clear message to his team, emphasizing the importance of continuous improvement rather than focusing solely on game outcomes. He encouraged the players to consistently elevate their performance, regardless of the match situation. Iyer noted that the team’s standard was set from the first match, and the focus should be on going a notch above every time they step onto the field.

The Indian team displayed a clinical performance throughout the tour, not allowing Zimbabwe any real opportunity to win. Iyer highlighted the energy and intent shown by the young players, particularly in back-to-back games. He expressed his special feeling about winning the series in Zimbabwe, noting the importance of players stepping up and taking responsibility.

Iyer also stressed the need for consistency in approach and attitude to maintain the momentum gained. He believes that the team’s calmness and courage will be beneficial for Indian cricket moving forward, even as future challenges arise.

Young talent shines and coaching praise

A standout performer in the series was 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who was named Player of the Series. Sooryavanshi accumulated 151 runs across the three matches, with his best performance being a knock of 81 runs off 49 balls on Sunday. Iyer praised the youngster for his fearless approach and tremendous energy on the field.

Sooryavanshi’s performance in the opening match was particularly historic, as he scored a maiden international half-century in just 18 balls. This achievement made him the youngest player to score a fifty in men’s international cricket, reaching the milestone at 15 years and 118 days. He surpassed the previous record held by Sachin Tendulkar, who was 16 years and 213 days old when he scored his first international fifty against Pakistan in 1989.

Former India opener Sadagopan Ramesh commented on the significance of the victory for Iyer, stating that the celebrations were understandable given the team’s recent struggles. Ramesh remarked that after a long wait for a T20I victory, even a win against Zimbabwe would bring immense relief to the captain. He also lauded VVS Laxman, who served as India’s interim head coach for the Zimbabwe tour, for consistently delivering positive results when in charge of the national side.

Iyer, a senior figure in the Indian setup, reflected on his own experience, noting that he has played a similar number of T20I matches, around 55 to 60, as many of his teammates. He emphasized the importance of making his teammates comfortable and relaxed to bring out their best performances, recognizing the special talents within the squad, many of whom also play in the IPL.
